Maldives launched its first helpline to provide psychological first aid services on Wednesday, acknowledging that relationship troubles, family issues, financial troubles or exam stress can send people reeling with thoughts of suicide.

The helpline was inaugurated by Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu. The helpline, housed at the ministry of health will provide service around the clock every day of the week, with its workers working round-the clock to keep demons at bay.

The Maldives ministry of health tweeted: Introducing the National Mental Health Helpline in the Maldives. Reach out anytime for mental health support and assistance by calling 1677. 

The ministry said that their aim in establishing this helpline is to provide support in overcoming various challenges faced in life and other different psychological difficulties faced by individuals through providing mental health first aid services via a phone call, and through this, promoting psychological wellbeing.

Additionally, Maldives health ministry intends to provide psychosocial support and assistance to persons faced with psychological challenges of any type, allowing them a safe space to share their thoughts and gain support. The service will provide counselling and support tailored to individual mental health challenges. Red flags, such as callers expressing suicidal thoughts will be conveyed to relevant government agencies. In addition to mental health first aid, they will also provide referrals under the set policies.
