As birth rates fall and rural migration slows, cities are aging and – in some cases – beginning to shrink.

Deliberations at the session are informed by findings of a new ESCAP study Urban Transformation in Asia and the Pacific: From Growth to Resilience which offers policy solutions and showcases cities in the region that are already pioneering change.

Budget housing accounted for just 19 per cent of the share in the same quarter. This points to the growing inequality in servicing the housing needs in the country and also the yawning gap in the purchasing powers of the rich and the poor.

Under the scheme guidelines, initial rents for ARHCs are determined by local authorities based on surveys. The rent increases by 8 per cent biennially, with a maximum cumulative increase of 20 per cent over five years.

Families that had built lives in Pakistan over decades now find themselves in refugee camps or on the streets of Kabul and other major cities, with no access to humanitarian aid.

The health of cities and their residents is deeply intertwined with the planning, design, and construction of the built environment. The interaction of the built and the unbuilt, of the grey with the green and blue infrastructure, is a key determinant of the quality of life in a city.

India must urgently integrate population planning into climate change initiatives and sustainable development goals to forge long-term policies that protect our planet.

At the onset of the earthquake, the IFRC shelter, and disaster response teams were deployed to the impacted areas and emergency items and cash were delivered to the affected families.
