The ruling follows a lawsuit spearheaded by a coalition of fishermen and rights groups who sought justice for the environmental damage and the collapse of the fishing industry in the aftermath of the disaster.

The trial in India’s industrial hub of Surat reduced particulate emissions by 20 to 30 per cent, with participating plants complying fully with environmental regulations.

Factors that affect ozone generation include solar radiation, humidity, precipitation and the presence of precursors – substances that lead to the formation of a pollutant through a chemical reaction – such as methane, nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds.

The programme would also develop an integrated pollutant and a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory system to provide a comprehensive approach to tracking and managing emissions data.

This decision stems from Greenpeace’s involvement in protests against the pipeline, which began in 2016 and drew global attention to Indigenous rights and environmental protection.
