Maldives Makes a First Foray into Hydroponic Farming

The hydroponic farming project was carried out by local NGO Kihaadhoo Development Society (KIDS). The revenue generated from the project will be utilized for the activities carried out by the NGO. It was funded from the Bank of Maldives’ Small Grants Fund.

A greenhouse and hydroponics vegetable farming project is beginning to bear fruits in the Maldives’ island of Kihaadhoo in the Baa atoll. The project was funded by the Bank of Maldives (BML) under its ‘Small Grants Fund’ scheme.

The country’s national bank made this announcement last week in its regular publication bulletin. According to BML, the hydroponic farming project was carried out by local NGO Kihaadhoo Development Society (KIDS).

As part of the project, four hydroponics systems were established with 180 slots in each system to grow more than 700 plants at a time.

BML revealed that the revenue generated from the project will be utilized for the activities carried out by the NGO.

The NGO has also conducted training sessions on hydroponic farming for interested locals in collaboration with the island’s Women’s Development Committee (WDC).

The training sessions were conducted in a bid to educate the community and raise awareness regarding hydroponics farming.

BML launched the Small Grants initiative as a fifth of the series, in March 2022, as part of its series of 12, high-impact monthly community initiatives leading up to its 40th anniversary celebrated back in November 2022.

The country’s national bank revealed that through the initiative, eight winning projects will be selected to win a grant of MVR 250,000 each, to implement their plan successfully. It was opened for NGOs to carry out community-based projects that address environmental issues and promote sustainable development.
