Pakistan Extends 1.4 Million Afghan Refugees’ Stay, UNHCR Applauds Move

UNHCR acknowledged that Pakistan’s decision marks a significant step in ensuring humanitarian assistance and protection for Afghan refugees amid regional challenges and geopolitical complexities.

In a pivotal decision aimed at offering continued support to Afghan refugees, Pakistan has extended the validity of Proof of Registration (PoR) cards until June 30, 2025. The announcement, made following a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, affects over 1.4 million legally residing Afghan refugees.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has warmly welcomed Pakistan’s decision, hailing it as a significant relief for Afghan refugees amidst ongoing uncertainties. Philippa Candler, UNHCR’s Representative in Pakistan, expressed gratitude, emphasizing that this extension underscores Pakistan’s enduring tradition of hospitality and compassion towards refugees.

“For decades, Pakistan has shown remarkable solidarity and empathy towards displaced Afghans, despite facing its own challenges,” noted Candler. “This extension of PoR cards is crucial for safeguarding refugee families’ access to essential services such as healthcare and education, while shielding them from involuntary repatriation to Afghanistan.”

The decision follows discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, during his visit to Islamabad earlier this week. Grandi’s visit focused on addressing the pressing issues confronting the Afghan refugee community in Pakistan.

The PoR cards serve as critical identity documents for Afghan refugees, enabling them to legally reside in Pakistan and access vital services. The extension alleviates immediate concerns following the expiry of previous cards on June 30, ensuring continuity in protection measures for vulnerable refugee populations.

Moving forward, UNHCR reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with Pakistan and the international community to provide sustained support to both Afghan refugees and their host communities. The agency stressed the importance of pursuing long-term solutions that promote stability and dignity for all affected by displacement in the region.

UNHCR acknowledged that Pakistan’s decision marks a significant step in ensuring humanitarian assistance and protection for Afghan refugees amid regional challenges and geopolitical complexities.
