Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has placed eight northern districts on high alert for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) as rising temperatures and monsoon rains accelerate glacier melt, threatening lives, infrastructure, and tourism in vulnerable valleys.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has issued a high alert for Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risks across eight districts as accelerated glacier melting combines with recent rainfall to heighten the danger of sudden, catastrophic flooding.
This warning, issued on Wednesday, targets Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Bahrain (Swat), Swat, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, and Mansehra. These mountainous regions, home to thousands of glaciers and glacial lakes, are particularly susceptible as Pakistan grapples with the intensifying impacts of climate change.
Understanding the GLOF Threat
Glacial Lake Outburst Floods occur when natural dams – formed by moraine or ice – holding back glacial lakes suddenly fail, releasing massive volumes of water, debris, and sediment downstream. In Pakistan’s Hindu Kush, Himalayas, and Karakoram ranges, rapid warming has led to the formation of thousands of such lakes.
According to data from climate adaptation projects, approximately 3,044 glacial lakes exist in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and KP combined, with 33 identified as highly prone to hazardous outbursts. In the Hindukush region alone, including Swat, Chitral, and Upper Dir basins, hundreds of lakes have been mapped, with dozens classified as potentially dangerous.
Experts note that warming trends in the region exceed global averages, causing glaciers to retreat and lakes to expand. This process, exacerbated by heavy monsoon rains, increases hydrostatic pressure on unstable dams, raising the likelihood of breaches.

The authority has strongly advised tourists to avoid camping, trekking, and other outdoor activities in Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Kohistan until conditions stabilize.
