In a move to accelerate India’s fight against infectious diseases, two leading scientific institutions have joined forces to convert laboratory breakthroughs into life-saving clinical applications, narrowing the critical bench-to-bedside gap.
The department of science and technology (DST) under the ministry of science and technology have announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) and YRG CARE (the operational arm of the YR Gaitonde Medical, Educational and Research Foundation). The agreement aims to foster collaboration in infectious disease research and public health, directly addressing India’s need for faster translation of fundamental scientific discoveries into practical clinical tools that benefit society.
Landmark Partnership
The MoU focuses on developing joint research on infectious diseases and related public health issues. Its primary goal is to narrow the “bench to bed” gap by establishing a dedicated platform that converts basic laboratory research into actionable clinical solutions.
Through resource sharing, interdisciplinary projects, and academic programmes, the two institutions will combine their complementary strengths to produce impactful discoveries. The partnership explicitly reflects a shared commitment to scientific excellence, ethical practices, and innovation aimed at improving public health outcomes across India.
New Research Infrastructure Takes Shape
A centrepiece of the collaboration is the establishment of the Suniti Solomon Research Laboratory on the JNCASR campus in Bengaluru. This state-of-the-art facility will function as a vibrant hub for collaborative work, enabling scientists from both partners to pursue cohort-based studies and interdisciplinary projects.
JNCASR will provide the physical space, advanced instrumentation, research facilities, and access to its thriving academic ecosystem. YRG CARE will equip the laboratory and contribute its deep clinical expertise and experience in cohort development. The lab will also serve as a training ground, giving the next generation of scientists, students, and young researchers direct exposure to real clinical challenges.
Distinguished Faculty Fellowship
The agreement further introduces the YRGCARE – Suniti Solomon Distinguished Faculty Fellowship at JNCASR. Funded by YRG CARE for an initial five-year term, the fellowship will support a new faculty member – preferably a woman scientist – who will lead a dedicated research laboratory while contributing to JNCASR’s academic programmes.
The entire MoU is effective for an initial period of five years, setting the stage for sustained, long-term impact.
JNCASR, located in Jakkur, Bengaluru, was established in 1989 as an autonomous institution under the Department of Science and Technology. Founded by Bharat Ratna recipient Prof. CNR Rao, the centre has grown into a globally recognised multidisciplinary research institute.
It hosts more than 500 researchers working at the frontiers of science and engineering – from materials science and chemistry to genetics and biology. JNCASR consistently ranks among India’s top institutions: NAAC A++ accreditation (3.76/4), 4th in Nature Index life sciences among Indian academic institutions, and strong NIRF placements. Its research on material-pathogen interactions and fundamental biology makes it ideally positioned to drive translational breakthroughs.
YRG CARE in Chennai stands as one of India’s foremost institutions in HIV/AIDS research and care. Founded by the late Dr. Suniti Solomon – who in 1986 became the first physician to document HIV cases in India – the centre operates as the clinical and research arm of the YR Gaitonde Medical, Educational and Research Foundation. Over four decades, YRG CARE has provided care and support to more than 20,000 patients while pioneering prevention strategies, treatment protocols, and clinical research in infectious diseases.
Dr. Solomon’s legacy of compassionate care and scientific rigour is now permanently honoured through the naming of the new laboratory at JNCASR.
Broader Significance for Public Health Ecosystem
India possesses world-class basic research capabilities, yet translating discoveries into affordable diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics remains a persistent challenge – especially for infectious diseases that continue to burden millions.
By linking JNCASR’s cutting-edge basic science infrastructure with YRG CARE’s proven clinical and cohort expertise, the partnership directly tackles this gap. It aligns with the Government of India’s push, through DST and related bodies, to build indigenous solutions for public health threats.
Such collaborations are expected to yield faster development of new interventions, strengthen training pipelines, and create models that other institutions can replicate. Ultimately, the initiative promises tangible benefits for patients, healthcare systems, and society at large.
The signing underscores how targeted public-private and institutional partnerships can amplify India’s scientific prowess and deliver real-world health impact.
