    Sri Lanka President Unveils Economic Development Manifesto

    In his address, Wickremesinghe framed the upcoming election as a crucial decision between continuing the country’s recovery and risking a return to instability. “We have made significant progress since the upheaval of 2022,” he said.

    Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe officially launched his election manifesto this morning at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo. The event drew an audience of politicians, celebrities, and distinguished guests.

    The manifesto, which outlines a comprehensive plan for economic development, is available online at ranil2024.lk/manifesto but is currently accessible only in Sinhala. An English-language summary of the document highlights key pledges aimed at bolstering Sri Lanka’s economy.

    In his address, Wickremesinghe framed the upcoming election as a crucial decision between continuing the country’s recovery and risking a return to instability.

    “We are on a pathway to recovery from the chaos of 2022, only I have a plan for the next five years of our journey,” Wickremesinghe said. “With your vote, I will steer a unified Sri Lanka to a bright and stable future.”

    “Voting for an inexperienced leader is a gamble with our future and will cost hard working Sri Lankans dearly.”

    “Our economy is improving, but there is more to be done,” he said. “My plan welcomes investment, meaning we can pay for the services we need – like better healthcare, education and more training.”

    He added, “Our economic progress will mean a stable and productive future.”

    Key points of the manifesto include:

    Reducing the Cost of Living: Wickremesinghe promises to further lower prices on essential goods by eliminating taxes on these items and increasing the availability of local produce, while also facilitating imports where necessary.

    • Job Creation and Higher Wages: The plan aims to expand the job market through new employment opportunities and income-generating projects.
    • Tax Relief: The manifesto proposes the abolition of indirect taxes and the introduction of tax-free service incentives for professionals. This reform is scheduled to be implemented within the next two years.
    • Economic Plan: Wickremesinghe’s strategy involves attracting investment to fund essential services such as healthcare and education, aiming to secure long-term economic stability and productivity.
    • Urumaya and Aswasuma: The manifesto guarantees the delivery and expansion of these programs, which are designed to enhance stability and prosperity across the nation.

    The president’s speech emphasised his vision for a unified and prosperous Sri Lanka, urging voters to support his plan for continued progress and recovery.
