Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena visited Jaffna on Friday, emphasizing the government’s dedication to enhancing living standards in the northern peninsula amidst preparations for upcoming elections.
Addressing the Jaffna District Coordinating Committee, Gunawardena stressed, “This government is dedicated to improving the living conditions of the Jaffna Peninsula.” His remarks underscored increased financial allocations for local development initiatives and infrastructure improvements.
Gunawardena engaged with Tamil political leaders at the Jaffna Divisional Secretariat Office, where he oversaw the distribution of rice and egg incubators to low-income families. He described his visit as an opportunity “to monitor the progress made by all of you, as well as to get a little feedback where we stand today.”
The Prime Minister acknowledged the pivotal role of farmers in national development, highlighting their contribution to the private sector economy. “Farmers are all private contributors to the national development of the economy,” he remarked.
Gunawardena also addressed socio-economic challenges, noting, “Poverty numbers are fairly managed in the country,” while emphasizing the need to support vulnerable communities, particularly in remote northern villages.
His visit to Jaffna precedes a series of high-profile political engagements in the region ahead of the upcoming polls. Gunawardena reiterated the government’s commitment to improving services and infrastructure in the Northern Province, signaling a continued focus on regional development.
The Prime Minister’s statements reflect ongoing efforts by the Sri Lankan government to prioritize economic growth and welfare enhancements in marginalized areas, particularly in the northern regions of the country.
