Transparency International Bangladesh Raises Concerns Over Textbook Review Body Cancellation

The organization urged the interim government to remain steadfast in its commitment to reform and to resist all forms of communal and fundamentalist influence. TIB expressed hope for continued dedication to the core values of pluralism, inclusivity, and equality.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has issued a stark warning regarding the interim government’s recent decision to cancel the coordination committee responsible for amending and revising textbooks prepared by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB). The organization described the cancellation as a troubling compromise with radical factions, undermining the vision of a non-discriminatory “New Bangladesh.”

In a press statement released on Monday, TIB expressed alarm that this decision contradicts the values of inclusivity and communal harmony central to the concept of a “New Bangladesh.” TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman criticized the government’s response to perceived threats from radical groups, suggesting it sets a dangerous precedent for future policy-making.

Dr. Zaman emphasized the aspirations of students and citizens for a nation committed to peaceful coexistence and equal rights for all, regardless of religious or cultural background. He stated, “This ‘New Bangladesh’ should be non-discriminatory, non-sectarian, and transparent. The recent actions indicate a disturbing shift towards allowing hostility and division to take root.”

TIB’s leadership voiced concern that capitulating to radical threats not only endangers democratic principles but also aligns with communal ideologies that the organization seeks to combat. Dr. Zaman reassured that the anti-discrimination movement remains strong and resilient against oppressive forces.
